Old Craftsman Planes
Legend vs. Fact: The British Infill Plane It is hard to image a woodworking subject more surrounded by misconceptions and outright falsehoods than that of the infill plane. Yet, there is no shortage of material written on these planes. Unfortunately, most of it serves only to perpetuate the misinformation.
An accurate date is not that critical, unless you are interested in the planes value. The Craftsman tool line did not appear until , and the plane in question.
The plane was advertised as being useful for model and pattern makers. Like the and the , the lever cap was painted red from through final production. The main casting is japanned, with the exterior machined. This plane, as well as the and , has a small, circular depression, in which to place your index finger during use, at the toe. It also has a hole drilled in its handle so that it can be hung on a nail. Stanley actively solicited ideas from tradesman, and others, for tools that they could make.
This plane is an example of one such plane, and in an early Stanley advertisement for the plane, they specifically mention this fact:. However, this plane has no rear handle like the two previous. The plane was designed for household use, and lighter work. It was originally sold in toy tool chests, but gained such popularity that it was soon advertised as a craftsman’s tool. The earliest model of the plane has the top of its cutter rounded in a slight arc from side to side. The later model has the top of its cutter finished in an angular fashion, like those of the common bench planes.
This plane is japanned over its entire main casting, except for the sole.

This installment will focus on the development of the Craftsman brand during the s and s, as well as covering some of the tools sold by Sears in the pre-Craftsman era, in order to provide background context. Sears Roebuck was founded in by Richard W. Sears and initially operated as the R. Sears Watch Company in Minneapolis.
From its modest beginning as a merchandiser of watches, the company grew to become the largest mail-order company in the United States, and eventually became the largest retail company. As a large and unique organization, Sears has been the subject of many publications and studies. The current owner of Sears maintains a website at www. For over years Stanley made some of the best and as a result, most popular tools in the US. The Bailey design, still used by manufacturers today, started simple and over the years developed into a veritable masterpiece of “plane design” becoming Stanley’s bread and butter during good times and bad. The Bedrock, claimed by some to be the best design ever for a bench plane, was never quite as financially successful for Stanley as the Bailey line with less than robust sales.
But it was created at a time when craftsmen made a living with their hands and many wanted a step up in innovation and usability. Then there was always that status thing. Bedrock planes were for the “discerning” craftsman who wanted the best and consequently would pay the extra 2 bucks for the privilege. Early on Stanley recognized that they were not covering the spectrum of their potential customer base.
Though there were many who did make their livelihood in the crafts, not all did and there was a large segment of the population that didn’t need that degree of quality nor wished to pay a premium for a tool that they would use only occasionally. The early brands, Liberty Bell and Four Square had a practical reasoning and were in fact an option to the general homeowner.

British Broadcasting Corporation Home. Romano-British woodworking plane, found in excavations at Goodmanham, East Yorkshire in The object is unique in that the body of the plane is made of elephant ivory the rest is of iron. The plane was found in an enclosure ditch, part of a Romano-British village and although found in a 4th century context, may date to the earlier Roman period.
It appears to have been collected perhaps from a wealthier site as scrap material, for later re-use. The use of ivory for such an item is unique and this may represent a “demonstration piece” produced to show off the craftsman’s abilities to a wealthy client. The plane may have been imported from the Mediteranean area as a completed object or the ivory brought in separately. Comments are closed for this object.
