My best friend and I were on the bus coming home from school in the seventh grade, and we were almost at our stop. For the entire ride, she had been avoiding telling me the name of her new crush, who had been leaving her forlorn and mopey for weeks. I was getting impatient. I had never heard that word before. Bisexuality is more complicated than that, of course. Like her sister identities, such as pansexuality and omnisexuality, bisexuality implies an attraction to multiple or all genders. Shannon Scrivens can remember every detail of her first sexual encounter with another woman: the vodka she had beforehand to release her inhibitions; the smell of jasmine perfume; the David Bowie album that played in the background. She describes the moment afterwards when, hurriedly putting her clothes back on before her mother returned from work, she and her female friend agreed what had happened would not ruin their otherwise platonic relationship.

As confusing as this might sound to some — and at times when discussing her sexuality Shannon herself sounds confused — she is far from alone. According to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics, the number of British people defining themselves as bisexual has risen 45 per cent in just three years. This alleged increase is most notable in the young — for the first time, more 16 to year-olds describe themselves as bisexual than those who say they are gay or lesbian combined.

A survey by YouGov last year found that half of young people declared themselves as something other than per cent heterosexual. So what has sparked this staggering shift in the sexual tastes of our younger generation? Can half of all young people really be sexually fluid? Or are they simply labelling themselves bisexual in order to fit in with what is undoubtedly a fashionable trend?

In short, attraction and infidelity are not the assumed uncontrollable urges for those with sexualities other than heterosexual. Another difficult aspect of the hyper-sexualization of bisexual people is the threesome effect.

Again, just because I experience attraction to both men and women does not mean that I want to have sex with both of them at once, and to assume that I’d want to have sex with either person in the couple is again, narcissistic. And to my fellow bisexuals out there, if your partner is suspicious of you simply because of your sexuality, they are not worth your time.

What were some of your most surprising findings? A really beautiful finding from a lot of the women interviewed, which has shocked a few people, is that a lot of bisexual men—if you dealt with issues around openness and negotiation—made better fathers, lovers, and partners than hetero men. Why do you think these women reported that bi-sexual men made better lovers?

A look into the experiences of bisexual women who happened to fall in love with men. I’ve only ever been with my boyfriend and one woman, so it was a big deal when I wrote down that I was bisexual on that form. At least for me; it was the first time I had identified myself in that way. A year or so later, when I got pregnant, we went back in to the doctor to confirm and after we had heard our baby’s heartbeat for the first time, seen that it was a real being, that our lives were about to change, the nurse comes in to do my examination my boyfriend had left at this point and tells me in a sly voice, ‘I guess we can cross the bisexual off your chart, can’t we?

Bisexuality

Bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction , or sexual behavior toward both males and females, [1] [2] or to more than one sex or gender. The term bisexuality is mainly used in the context of human attraction to denote romantic or sexual feelings toward both men and women, [1] [2] and the concept is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientation along with heterosexuality and homosexuality , all of which exist on the heterosexual—homosexual continuum.

A bisexual identity does not necessarily equate to equal sexual attraction to both sexes; commonly, people who have a distinct but not exclusive sexual preference for one sex over the other also identify themselves as bisexual. Scientists do not know the exact cause of sexual orientation, but they theorize that it is caused by a complex interplay of genetic , hormonal , and environmental influences , [8] [9] [10] and do not view it as a choice.

More on that later. Much of this confusion seems to come from two sources: preconceptions about bisexuality and how it works, and preconceptions about marriage and what it’s for.

When our relationship is viewed from the outside, these ideas sit atop it like an incongruous cheap baseball cap and affect how we’re perceived. Here are the four ideas about marriage and bisexuality that I regularly encounter, and why they’re wrong:.

Why Do So Many Bisexuals End Up In “Straight” Relationships?

Dating as a queer woman presents a unique set of issues. Men would either ask me to explain what the term meant, incorrectly assume they knew exactly what it meant, or completely misidentify me. It quickly became a frustrating ritual for me, a self-identified queer woman and someone with a graduate-level education in gender and queer studies, to constantly be in a position of educating. Knowing what the term queer means, and how people choose to use and identity with it is vital. Being queer, like being gay or straight is not a choice.

That would happen later. First, I had to come out to myself. Growing up in a socially conservative religion, I was taught that sex was reserved for monogamously married men and women. And sure, I thought about kissing my best friend, but that was just hormones misfiring I blamed a lot on hormones misfiring.

I was convincing. I started having panic attacks in elementary school. Something was wrong with me, and somehow it was my fault. Boys pushed these anxieties to the back of my mind.
